    Maki Namekawa is the one of the pre-eminent interpreters of Philip Glass’s music on the piano and tonight she illuminates St George’s with the UK premiere of his first piano sonata, written specially for her by the composer. The sonata’s world premiere took place at Festival Ruhr in July 2019 and received widespread acclaim.

    In a special performance marking the end of the 2019/20 season of Philips Music, we welcome back pianist Maki Namekawa for the DC premiere of Philip Glass’s First Piano Sonata, composed for the pianist in 2019. Namekawa, whose 2014 recording of Glass’s complete Piano Etudes reached number 1 on the iTunes Classic charts, is recognized worldwide as the foremost interpreter of the piano music of Philip Glass. For this special performance, she pairs the First Piano Sonata with a suite of works that provide both contrast and revealing connection; Mozart Camargo Guarnieri’s Sonatina No 3, Alban Berg’s Sonata, Op. 1 and György Ligeti’s Musica ricercata.
